Bio

Ron Geva (born in 1997), is a young visual artist based in Israel. He graduated from Thelma-Yellin High School of The Arts (2011-2015), and has been creating independently since, focusing mainly on painting. He was always drawn to the connection between abstract ideas and physical materials- experimenting with different art forms, and refining his artistic style as a tool for authentic self expression.

Artist Statement

My body of work is comprised mainly of acrylic paintings in varying sizes. The surrealistic paintings integrate dream-like content and a realistic technique, a combo that serves me well in my exploration of subjects that exist between reality and imagination. As an artist, I’m interested in studying the grey areas- where images and ideas that are unrelated, or even considered contradictory, can make sense and live peacefully side by side. The pieces have an eclectic visual language that is influenced by a variety of topics, styles and approaches. In the paintings I alter between creating a detailed, rich textured look, and a fake, plastic-looking aesthetic. I use a bright and vivid color palette that is also dark and dull.

Content wise I try to explore the tension between the subject and its surroundings. I am interested in the relations between the inside and the outside- the individual and the rest. In my paintings I use common imagery such as human characters, houses, plants and other items. More often than not, however, the connection between them can’t be literally understood or explained, and instead they leave you with a sense of detachment. The characters themselves tend to reflect some sort of complexity- sad but peaceful, vulnerable yet strong, connected as well as lonely. I want to show a rich human experience and try to blur the lines between pretty and ugly, healthy and ill, weak and strong, manly and womanly.

During the creative process I let the visual narrative build itself, and take the role of a detective- using my inner world, my emotions and my thoughts as clues. In my art I get to connect the unconscious creative drive with the conscious technical practice of painting. The paintings communicate in an intuitive and emotional level using the language of the external world, the five senses and the physical reality. I find more meaning in raising questions rather than offering answers. Using all of these means, I try to form a fluid reality that allows me to praise myths and ideas and refute them at the same time.
